The Australian Dietary Guidelines (ADGs) provide information about the types and amounts of foods, food groups and dietary patterns that aim to promote health and wellbeing and reduce the risk of diet-related conditions and chronic diseases in our population.

If you are an Australian registered exercise professional (AusREP) it is important that you are familiar with the ADGs. Being familiar with the guidelines will ensure you are able to answer any nutrition-related questions from your clients without working outside of your scope of practice, and will know when to refer on to an appropriately qualified nutrition professional such as an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) or Accredited Sports Dietitian (AccSD). 

This course explores the following topics:

  • Why AusREPs need to understand the ADGs.
  • What are the ADGs?
  • Why do we need dietary guidelines?
  • How the ADGs were developed.
  • Myths and facts about the ADGs.
  • An explanation of the five ADGs and how AusREPs can use them to provide nutrition education to their clients.
  • The Australian Guide to healthy eating including discussion of the five food groups and recommended serve sizes.
  • Where discretionary foods fit in a healthy diet.
Accreditation Fitness Australia – 3 CECs* / REPs NZ – 3 CPDs (*valid until 04/03/2022)

Access Period You have 12 months from date of purchase to complete this course. A $50 extension fee will be required if you do not complete your course within the allocated time frame. If you wish to obtain the CECs/PDPs/CPDs, you will need to complete the course by the CEC expiry date listed above.   

Upon successful completion, course participants will:

  • Understand why they need to be familiar with the ADGs.
  • Explain how the ADGs fit into the scope of practice of AusREPs when it comes to providing nutrition advice.
  • Understand the role of the ADGs.
  • Understand how their ADGs were developed including their evidence base.
  • Be able to explain the five dietary guidelines and their relevance to AusREPs.
  • Be familiar with the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and how it can be used for providing evidence-based nutrition advice for the general population.
  • Be aware of the range of educational resources based around the ADGs and Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, which can be used in providing nutrition advice to clients.
  • Understand when to refer clients to an APD or AccSD for individualised nutrition advice outside the scope of practice of an AusREP. 

Course creator- Kate Marsh
Dr Kate Marsh is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian (Adv APD), Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) and Health & Medical Writer.  She divides her time between clinical practice (in her private practice in Sydney) and health and medical writing. Kate writes for both consumer and health professional publications and has co-authored a number of books and textbook chapters.  She is a previous presenter for FILEX and has developed numerous CEC courses for Network, on the topics of nutrition, diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
